Therefore, we use a total of three CFexpress memory cards (Angelbird AV Pro XT 660 GB, Lexar Professional 1,750 MB/s, SanDisk Extreme Pro 1,700 MB/s) to measure the maximum possible read speed and give the maximum value in the table.

There are multiple form factors that feature different PCIe lane counts.

The Sabrent solutions use a metal chassis with surrounding plastics to soften edges. The quickest of these solutions is the Type-C card, which offers four lanes of PCIe connectivity and a max speed of 4GB/s. The Sabrent Rocket solutions all use Type-B, a two-lane interface with peak speeds of 2GB/s; the Rocket CFx is rated at 1.7GB/s. CFexpress Type A Cards use the NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 bus with a single lane. The main difference between type A and type B cards other than their size is that Type B cards use a dual-lane system for speeds up to 1700MB/s whereas Type A cards only have a single lane throughput for a GAL max speed of 800MB/s. It seems the Prograde card has a more gradual decline in performance as it thermal throttles, whereas the Sony card dropped quickly to around 300MB/s read and write.

CFexpress Type-A cards are slightly smaller, although thicker, and faster than UHS-II memory. For our testing today, we will be relying on the pictured PCIe 3.0 x4 CFExpress reader created for us by Lexar some time ago. As a bit of confirmation, we always test with multiple readers we have on hand and of both the ThunderBolt 3 and the newer USB 3.2 2×2 spec.
